Sustainable Development

NORTHEAST ENERGY EFFICIENCY PARTNERSHIP

HIGH PERFORMANCE BUILDING PROTOCOL

Working with the Northeast Energy Efficiency Partnership (NEEP) and the New England High Performance Schools Collaborative, ERS developed this design, construction, and maintenance protocol that is to be used by the states as the criteria for high performance school construction programs. The protocol established the minimum common requirements that need to be met, but it is designed to be flexible according to the needs of the individual state.

NORTHEAST ENERGY EFFICIENCY PARTNERSHIP

BEHIND-THE-METER STUDY

ERS and NYSERDA collaborated on a market and technical assessment of behind-the-meter battery storage for opportunities in New York City under New York’s Reforming the Energy Vision (REV) and Demand Management Program (DMP). The NYSERDA-sponsored study examined the current state of battery storage technologies that are feasible in behind-the-meter settings and investigated the associated business and revenue models. Through the study non-cost barriers to implementation were identified and a strategic approach to near-term programmatic opportunities was recommended.

DEEP SAVINGS AND NET ZERO ENERGY

ERS performed a market and opportunity assessment of deep savings projects and net zero energy buildings for NYSERDA. Our study examined these concepts in nonresidential applications for both new construction and existing buildings. The research focused on offices and retail and educational facilities, and we developed a conceptual framework that served as a foundation for subsequent research and analysis.

Steinway & Sons
SOLAR THERMAL PROJECT

Steinway & Sons contracted with ERS to conduct a New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) -sponsored FlexTech comprehensive energy study of its primary manufacturing facility in Queens and its renowned Steinway Hall showroom in Manhattan. ERS secured the funding to develop and oversee the installation of a state-of-the-art dust collection system and solar-thermal system to dehumidify designated areas in the manufacturing process. The solar system is the first and largest of its kind in an industrial setting. The study efforts are pending to assist Steinway in furthering these sustainability efforts and pursuing LEED certification. The projects recommended for the manufacturing facility resulted in a total savings of 30%, while savings for the Steinway Hall facility were a more modest 15%. Steinway & Sons has already implemented many of the measures, and ERS is working with the facility management to implement the larger dust collection and solar thermal projects.
